Participan:

Invitados al Café Bar Emiliana: Mercedes Melo, Lizabel Mónica y Yolo Bonilla.
Escritores, lectores (y promotores ellos mismos) asiduos al Café Emiliana convocados para la acción poética: Anna Lidia Vega Serova, Adriana Normand, Yunier Guerra, Darsi Fernández, Cristina Sánchez, Susana Grass, Soleida Ríos.

Pepe Herrera. From the series "La ciudad de las columnas". 2009. 46" x 46". Mixed media on canvas

Opening reception: Friday, October 9th, 2009. 7:30 p.m.

Dates: From October 5th through November 2nd, 2009

Admission: Free

Regular hours: Tuesday - Saturday 12:00 - 6:00 p.m. and Mondays by appointment

“Cardo ni ortiga cultivo ... ” the one-man show by Cuban artist Pepe Herrera presented at Cremata Gallery, is his “opera prima” in our city. He arrives preceded by his recent and very successful participation in two major exhibitions in Spain: “Entre rías…” reviewed extensively in El Nuevo Herald (July13th, 2009),  inaugurated in the very center of Madrid’s art triangle next to the Prado Museum, and “La isla expandida” showcased at Huelva’s Museum of Art.

Pepe Herrera is a master twice over: he enjoys international recognition as an outstanding figure of the celebrated 1980s Cuban generation, and at the same time, he is one of the best serigraphers of our time. His move to Barcelona 20 years ago and later to Madrid helped him become a major player in the European market. In his previous visit, he launched the first of a series of serigraphs of master Cundo Bermúdez carried out by him, edited by Cremata Gallery. Let this exhibition, full of mystery and subtlety, fill you with wonder as it explores an imaginary garden.

ELS COLORS DEL FOC - EXPOSICIÓ COL·LECTIVA DE DAVIS MUSEUM

LA INAUGURACIÓ ÉS DIJOUS 8 D'OCTUBRE

Cicle sobre sostenibilitat.
"Els 4 elements: El foc"

Fum. Flames. Explosió de colors. Cendres...

Charest-Weinberg Gallery presents Davis / Langlois
Into The Void: The Ballad of The Martyr as Told by Ingres

From Oct 7th through Nov 21st, 2009

Robert Davis and Michael Langlois. Resurrection (Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres). 2009. Oil on canvas. 40 x 50 inches

Opening reception: October 7th, 2009. 6:00 p.m.
Location: Charest-Weinberg Gallery. 250 NW 23rd Street. Space 408. Miami, FL 33127
Dates: From Oct 7th through Nov 21st, 2009
Admission: Free

"Let me hear no more of that absurd maxim: ‘We need the new, we need to follow our century, everything changes, everything is changed.’ Sophistry- all of that! Does nature change, do the light and air change, have the passions of the human heart changed since the time of Homer? ‘We must follow our century’: but suppose my century is wrong? Because my neighbor does evil, am I therefore obligated to do it also? Because virtue, as also beauty, can be misunderstood by you, have I in turn got to misunderstand it? Shall I be compelled to imitate you!”

Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, c.1834

Charest-Weinberg Gallery presents the first Miami exhibition of artists Davis / Langlois, Into The Void: The Ballad of The Martyr as Told by Ingres, taking place October 7th through November 21st, 2009. This exhibition will showcase work fresh from their exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (September 5th - 28th, 2009), as well as new pieces made specifically for their Miami debut. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, October 7th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Davis / Langlois conceived Into the Void as a meta-fable narrated by a resurrected Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. The story features Iman, a 15-year-old Palestinian-American, as she contemplates the plight of Suquamish leader Chief Seattle, who is forced to relinquish his sacred land to the tune of Black Sabbath and the howls of Soundgarden. In her quest for honor, Iman finds herself hanging on to every prophetic line. Through the tradition of martyrdom in Baroque and Neo-Classical painting, Davis / Langlois explore contemporary notions of assimilation, empire, xenophobia and environmentalism. The exhibition invokes the question ‘what is honor, and what is honorable? What price does one pay for steadfast commitment and profound devotion?’

Rob Davis and Mike Langlois have been artistic collaborators since 1997 after meeting at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Redefining the conventional notion that paintings are made by a single artist or hand, each takes an equal role in developing ideas, choosing subjects and executing the works.

Known for their contemporary representational paintings, the duo constructs narratives, each painting acting as part of a larger story and by their proximity, forcing viewers to make a conceptual jump from image to image. With a vocabulary derived from popular culture and subcultures, the artists are committed to applying classical techniques to contemporary art. Their seemingly dissimilar installations center on themes ranging from desire, family, identity, martyrdom, utopia and politics.

Location: TBA

Miami Beach Community Health Center (MBCHC), a recognized comprehensive not-for-profit health care network for Miami-Dade County residents, is inviting artists to participate in Through The Eyes of Love, a juried art exhibition that will offer a way for artists to show the depth of their thoughts and feelings as it relates to HIV/AIDS.

Artists can submit paintings, sculptures and photographs to depict how this disease has changed the lives of so many around the world. The submission deadline for artists is Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009.

Held in honor of World AIDS Day on December 1st and in partnership with ArtCenter South Florida, MBCHC’s Through the Eyes of Love will be free and open to the public on Miami Beach (address to be announced) from Tuesday, December 1st through Sunday, December 20th, 2009. An opening reception is planned for Monday, November 30th, 2009.

“We were so amazed by the great response from last year’s exhibition with more than 100 artists showing their works of art,” said Kathryn Abbate, CEO of Miami Beach Community Health Center. “This awareness event again will shed more light on this disease and offer hope as there are viable treatment options allowing people to lead productive lives.”

To ensure the success of this community effort, this project will be supported in part by The City of Miami Beach, The Miami Herald, South Florida Blade, 411 Magazine, Ambiente Magazine, Unity Coalition, Bitner Goodman and Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

To participate in Miami Beach Community Health Center’s Through the Eyes of Love, or to receive more event information, visit www.miamibeachhealth.org or call 954.730.7730.

MBCHC provides Miami-Dade residents with free HIV testing and ongoing HIV/AIDS medical care, plus is an enrollment site for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) that provides free medication for patients living with HIV/AIDS.

Established in 1977, Miami Beach Community Health Center is a fully integrated health care network providing quality, affordable healthcare and support services to the community. Offering a broad spectrum of services for patients of all ages, Miami Beach Community Health Center operates health centers in South Beach, North Beach, Little Haiti and North Miami.
