Especial "Desde Cuba: New Cinema" (Third Edition)

Director in Focus – Esteban García Insausti

Mr Insausti, was born in Havana in 1971 and is a graduate of the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA). In addition, he obtained a degree from the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television – the school founded by Fernando Birri and Gabriel García Márquez. He began his professional career as a script writer for cuban television at age 19, to later become one of the first independent filmmakers of his generation. He enters the cuban film industry (ICAIC) with his first fiction short film “Mas de lo mismo” (More of the same), which was chosen as an official selection in Cannes 2001. Some of his other films include : “Luz Roja”, “Tres Veces Dos” –which was the official selection at Montreal, Biarritz and Huelva Film Festivals in 2004 and which was also chosen by FIPRESCI as one “10 best films shown in Cuba during the Festival de Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana in 2004”. Another film, “Existen” an experimental documentary, won the Premio Coral to the Best Experimental Film in 2007 in the same Festival.

Mr Insausti is currently considered by several national and international critics as one of the most prominent directors of the avant- garde movement within the film industry in Cuba. His most recent film, “Larga Distancia” (”Long Distance”) is currently in a postproduction stage.

Mr Insausti’s award winning film “Existen”, was presented in Providence during the First Edition of “Desde Cuba: New Cinema” in 2008. This year, he joins us as a juror for the Shorts Competition Award.

Special Program
"Desde Cuba: New Cinema" (Third Edition)

A segment dedicated to showcase the works of young and mostly independent cuban filmmakers, “Desde Cuba: New Cinema”, was originally presented in Providence in the fall of 2008 at the initiative of Christine Limonte, a Brown University student. This first and exciting event evolved into an ongoing program which is now presenting its Third Edition as part of the New England Festival of Ibero American Cinema, and which includes award winning short films and documentaries.

The significance of these films cannot be overstated. The lack of available resources for filmaking and producing and the economic isolation of Cuba have proven incapable of hindering the evolution of ideas, enthusiasm, hopes and dreams of a new young generation of filmmakers. Overcoming what at times may seem insurmountable burocratic difficulties, they turn to the streets and into themselves to find a story to tell and to create a fiction film, an animation or a documentary.

Once again, we are privileged to be able to share their talent and their work with our community of New England.

Panel Discussion with Director & Doña Dedé Mirabal after screening:

Mirabal sisters
Code Name: Butterflies | Nombre Secreto: Mariposas. Cecilia Domeyko, 2009,USA, 63 min.

"Code Name: Butterflies" is the first documentary to tell the powerful story of the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic. In the 1950s, Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal played a crucial role in creating a secret resistance movement against Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, one of the most bloodthirsty tyrants the world has ever known. When the dictator had them assassinated and tried to make it look like an accident, public indignation signaled the beginning of the end of Trujillo’s dictatorship which fell six months later. The courage of these women who helped bring freedom and democracy to their country is legendary. Today, the Dominican Republic owes much to these incredible women who dared to fight for what they believed in.

Special Feature Presentation
Q& A with the Director, after presentation of the film.

MIGUEL COYULA – Writer, Director, Cinematographer

Miguel Coyula was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1977. He is part of a new wave of independent Cuban filmmakers working outside of the mainstream using digital technology on shoestring budgets. He has garnered many awards at film festivals with short films such as Dancing on Needles (1999), Nice Going (1999), Clase Z Tropical (2000), and The Plastic Fork (2001).

After graduating in 1999 from the prestigious International Film and Television School at San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, Coyula came to New York on an invitation from the Providence Latino Film Festival to show one of his films.

While in New York he met Anna Strasberg of The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and was offered an acting scholarship. Returning to the U.S. to attend the Strasberg Institute, Coyula made his first feature, Red Cockroaches.

Reviewers reached for comparisons to Blade Runner: a bleak, futuristic Manhattan with flying cars, monumental Fritz Lang architecture in acid rain, and a long-dead sister who turns up alive to disrupt the world of her brother/lover. The 2004 Edinburgh International Film Festival described Red Cockroaches as “in the tradition of David Lynch” while Variety called it “undeniably inventive, visually stunning” and a “triumph of technology in the hands of a visionary with know-how.”

In 2009, Coyula received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in support of his work on Memories of Overdevelopment.

Memories of Overdevelopment premiered at Sundance 2010 and subsequently won the Havana Star for Best Film at the 2010 Havana Film Festival New York.

Coyula is currently in preproduction on a new feature, Blue Road, based on his own unpublished novel. It is the second film of a trilogy begun by Red Cockroaches.
