Gira Café con Pan y vuelta pa´ atrás

Zenen Zeferino in New York May 18 – June 14, 2015

Zenen Zeferino, jaranero and poet has been a pioneering force in
Son Jarocho music for over thirty years. Born in Jáltipan de Morelos,
Veracruz, he was a founding member of the legendary group
Chuchumbé in the 1990’s and later Quemayama, and currently plays
as Zenen Zeferino y el Sonoro Sueño.

Alec Dempster, visual artist and musician, has been involved in Son
Jarocho for twenty years, as musicologist and jaranero, and the
“official” artist of the genre, having created countless album covers,
as well as other series, including his Lotería Jarocha linoleum prints.

Son Jarocho is 250-year-old folk music from Veracruz, Mexico,
deriving its name from the mixed descendants of African, European,
and Indigenous people - inhabitants of the southern part of the state
since Colonial times who came to be known as “Jarochos.” Son
Jarocho reflects the cultural richness of its practitioners, consisting of
a fusion of Spanish (primarily Flamenco), African (and AfroCaribbean),
and Indigenous elements. This tradition was born out of
the Fandango, a community gathering featuring a tarima, a large
wooden platform made for percussive dancing, around which
everyone gathers to dance, play, and sing, often all night long.
