Acerca de RECARGABLE, Jorge Luis Santana, personal exhibition

La obra de Santana, en un sentido holístico, es lo que pudiera clasificar como coherente. Desde su irrupción en los circuitos expositivos cubanos, hace casi 20 años, este creador hizo obvia su propensión hacia morfologías poco convencionales, según las prácticas dominantes y al uso en aquellos inicios de los 90’s. Frente a la planimetría casi absoluta y el desarrollo de la cerámica escultórica, Santana apostó por lenguajes hibridados que estremecían la visualidad más acendrada en el discurso plástico camagüeyano. Poco a poco se hicieron asiduas sus piezas instalativas, procuradoras de la resemantización del objeto y, sobre todo, tendentes a la modelación de una poética efectiva en su retórica visual. De tal suerte, el artista ha habituado y entrenado tanto a la crítica como al público para el establecimiento de un diálogo siempre inconcluso, abierto, demandante del lector “macho” de Cortázar que tan coartado ha sido por los facilismos de todos los tiempos.

Recargable es una muestra cuya concepción se sustenta en varios resortes. El primero de ellos es la memoria, capacidad que nos permite existir en un pasado -a veces sin siquiera haberlo vivido- y releerlo sin la contaminación inherente a la inmediatez. En este caso, la memoria opera en tanto apelación a referentes textuales de obras anteriores que ahora son re-presentadas, pero solo como activaciones semánticas casi extraviadas ya en la distancia. El segundo de los resortes empleados es la interdiscursividad de las piezas, que se manifiesta en la medida en que, si bien estas pueden funcionar como entidades autosuficientes en sí mismas, también es posible el establecimiento de complementariedades intertextuales reveladoras de niveles más complejos de significación. Y, por último, quisiera mencionar las maneras con las que este creador se apropia del léxico objetual cotidiano para trocar las literalidades en tropos de densidad apreciable. Es esta, probablemente, unas de las claves más prominentes de su trabajo.

Con el ánimo de sistematizar una poética personal, Recargable nos advierte sobre la versatilidad visual de Jorge Luis Santana, quien con holgura pericial se desenvuelve con acierto en medios y soportes bien desiguales entre sí. Por eso, desde la elección del título hasta la manera en que se han mapeado las piezas, esta es una exposición que evoca un pasado mediato para diagramar, con la lúdica del vaticinio, el porvenir de la obra del artista.

La poesía digital, la poesía del siglo XXI, resaltada en un nuevo estudio y antología

Hay muchas maneras de hacer poesía hoy en día, pero la que principalmente tiene estrecha relación con la lenguaje de las nuevas tecnologías es la poesía digital. En Poesía Digital: teoría, historia, Antologías, Jorge Luiz Antonio presenta un panorama de la historia de la poesía digital, desde sus orígenes, en 1959, hasta nuestros días, con las innovaciones más avanzadas y creativas. El autor muestra cómo los recursos de informática, aparentemente fríos e exactos, pueden dar una nueva vida al universo de la poesía al llevar sus productores y apreciadores a las otras direcciones artísticas dentro de la llamada cultura digital.
 
Para Jorge Luiz Antonio su Poesía Digital: teoría, historia, antologías es un libro que "estudia un tipo de poesía contemporánea en sus relaciones con las artes, diseño y tecnología digital, que es una continuación y un desdoblamiento de poesía vanguardista, concreta, visual, y experimental". Según el poeta portugués E. M. de Melo e Castro, el trabajo tiene la intención y el procedimiento del autor de hacer una discusión "claramente sobre las razones que pueden invocarse para el estudio de las transformaciones que el uso de las tecnologías ya está causando en el concepto de poesía".  

Poesía digital: teoría, historia, antologías es un libro que viene acompañado por un DVD que recoge una antología completa de poemas digitales y sus predecesores, introduciendo 501 poemas de 226 poetas y 110 textos teóricos de 73 autores, brasileños y extranjeros, con aproximadamente 1500 páginas impresas y electrónicas, que da un panorama raro de lo que ya se ha hecho en el área de experimentación poética, en Brasil y en otros países. El DVD muestra que la "poesía, arte, diseño, ciencia y tecnología digital forman el quinteto transdisciplinario que una porción de los poetas contemporáneos escogió para lograr su comunicación poética", como dice Jorge Luiz Antonio.

Digital poetry, the poetry of the XXIst century, highlighted in a new study and anthology


Jorge Luiz Antonio presents a panorama of digital poetry in Brazil and in the world


There are many ways of making poetry nowadays, but the one that mostly engages the new technologies of language is digital poetry. In Digital Poetry: Theory, History, Anthologies, Jorge Luiz Antonio presents a panorama of digital poetry history, from its origins, in 1959, until our days with the most advanced and creative innovations. The author shows how the resources of computer science, apparently cool and exact, can give new life to the universe of poetry when taking their producers and appreciators to the other artistic directions inside digital culture.

For Jorge Luiz Antonio his Digital Poetry: Theory, History, Anthologies is a book that "studies a type of contemporary poetry in its relationship with the arts, design and  computational technology, which is a continuation and an unfolding of avant-garde, concrete, visual, and experimental poetry". According to the Portuguese poet E.M. de Melo e Castro, the work has "clearly the intention and the author's accomplishment of a discussion about the reasons that can be invoked for the study of the transformations that the use of the technologies is already causing in the concept of poetry".

Digital poetry: theory, history, anthologies comes accompanied by a DVD that gathers a complete anthology of digital poems and their predecessors, introducing 501 poems of 226 poets and 110 theoretical texts of 73 authors, Brazilians and foreigners, with about 1500 printed and electronic pages, giving a rare panorama of what has already been done in the area of poetic experimentation, in Brazil and in other countries. The DVD shows that "poetry, art, design, science and digital technology form the transdisciplinary quintet that a portion of the contemporary poets chose to accomplish their poetic communication", as Jorge Luiz Antonio says.

Segundo o poeta português E.M. de Melo e Castro, a obra traz “claramente a intenção e a ação do autor de realizar uma discussão sobre as razões que podem ser invocadas para o estudo das transformações que o uso das tecnologias estão já a causar no próprio conceito de poesia”.

Poesia digital: teoria, história, antologias é um livro acompanhado de um DVD que reúne uma completa antologia de poemas digitais e seus antecessores, apresentando 501 poemas de 226 poetas e 110 textos teóricos de 73 autores, tanto brasileiros como estrangeiros, com cerca de 1500 páginas impressas e eletrônicas, dando um raro panorama do que já foi feito na área da experimentação poética, tanto no Brasil como no Exterior. O DVD mostra que “poesia, arte, design, ciência e tecnologia digital formam o quinteto transdisciplinar que uma parcela dos poetas contemporâneos escolheu para realizar a sua comunicação poética”, completa Jorge Luiz Antonio.

El artista Samuel Riera ha agregado la obra “Poemas Visuales”. Se trata de una colección de poemas que se mueven en el horizonte entre la plástica, la literatura, y los nuevos medios. Con un original diseño Web, y un interés evidente por las animaciones realizadas con tecnología antigua, casi descontinuada, estos diez poemas resultan innovadores en más de un sentido dentro de la literatura cubana.

On November 14th, 2009, MIRIAM FERNANDES Gallery will host their Grand Opening Reception featuring a solo exhibition of Rick Garcia’s latest, ‘never been seen before’, series titled, Cuba con Leche. Guests will enjoy an evening amid the colorful paintings of Rick Garcia, including delicious hors d'oeuvres with Cuban flavors by Relish Catering, and a performance by the Fusion Flamenco quartet with Ana Miranda.

The evening will kick off at 6:00 p.m. with a lecture and discussion on Cuban-American Pop Art, “So Close, Yet So Far Away” by Art Educator, Edwin Stirman.

Rick Garcia, a Miami-born native with "Cuban blood," developed his unique Pop style by incorporating Cuban and American cultural icons with bright colors, extraordinary details from everyday life, and a key Cuban map within each work. Miriam Fernandes, “I chose to launch my opening with Rick Garcia and Pop Art because we are in Miami; the colors and relationships are so close at heart.” And after a recent trip to Europe, Pop-Art’s bright colors, geometric forms and recognizable images from everyday life, remains a relevant international style which continues to be reinvented. This exhibition will be carried through December 1st, 2009.

On December 5th, MIRIAM FERNANDES Gallery will a host an opening reception in celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach titled, Art Basel is in the air & Art Brazil is here. As a native of Brazil, Miriam Fernandes is proud of the world-wide recognition and achievement of Brazilian artists, “Brazilian Art has come a long way from the famous street graffiti that first captured the attention of top art advocates world-wide”. During this art season, MIRIAM FERNANDES Gallery will feature a special tribute to the free-spirited and uniquely diverse culture of Brazil through beautiful works of art from top Brazilian artists.

Art Brazil will also integrate accomplished American artists as an interpretation of the American embrace of the Brazilian culture. The objective will be to compare the impressionist colors of the abstract geometric display from Brazilian, Goncalo Ivo compared to the abstract nature expressionist of American, Charles DuBack. Alongside, Brazilian, Dina de Oliveira’s subtle chromatic abstraction with a light touch of mysticism translated from her Amazon roots will be compared to the extraordinary realist landscapes of American, Don McClain and Brazilian Aldemir Martins.

Lecture and Discussion by Art Educator, Edwin Stirman, will start the evening off at 6:00 p.m. Stirman will share an intellectual awareness to the history of Brazilian Art, “From the Streets to the Museums.”

January will launch the prized work of New England artist, Charles DuBack, from his series, Nature Translation. Charles DuBack (b.1926) first visited Maine from New York City in the mid-1950s; a seminal period when New York post-war modernism arrived in Maine.

Coming to Maine in the mid-1950s provided a turning point in Charlie DuBack’s artistic career. Like many New York artists, DuBack originally planned to spend a summer at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture but eventually established a life-long love of the Maine landscape.

A devoted modernist inspired by the earlier paintings of Picasso and Matisse, DuBack was equally involved in the emerging Color Field and Pop Art movements of the day. The critical acclaim for these early works later translated into love of patchwork colors and bright brushwork in watercolors.

With a minimum of bravura brush strokes, DuBack deftly describes fir trees, sunlight glinting on water, or the rising and the setting sun. DuBack, who had shared a New York studio with sculptor Bernard Langlais and painter Alex Katz in the 1950s, was part of a group of artists who all settled in mid-coast Maine as summer residents.

Over the years, DuBack, developed an especially intimate knowledge of the Maine woodlands. With an eye for defining color and shape, he translates that visual vocabulary into works that convey the vibrancy and animation of nature. DuBack’s recognition amongst his contemporaries reflects his years of experience and great potential. Charles DuBack’s Nature Translation will be carried through January 30th, 2010, exhibiting works from 1952 to 2008.
